Doing a broth fast requires rules. But because this is a spiritual exercise, it's not about the rules! Just as Jesus taught about the Sabbath in ways that made it clear the heart was more important than the rules, so my wife and I are trying to take the same attitude.
This week, we were invited by the people to have dinner. Even though we are quietly fasting for Lent, we said yes without mentioning it and ate normal dinner with them. Hospitality and relationships are more important to the heart of a Lenten fast than strictly only eating broth.
