CHOLESTEROL UPDATE: i put these in all caps so when i review them they are easier to find. Met with doc today to go over labs. Specifically the very very nasty ldl and total cholesterol numbers. LDL-p (fractionation) 2137 healthy is under 935. LDL 312 healthy is under 200. All other levels are really good. She is going to run a carotid angiography to see if i am getting a disease progression. I had a cardiac calcium test done in 2023 prior to may of that year and my score was 0 which is encouraging. However, upon reviewing my diet she said most likely i cannot reverse this as it is genetic without medical intervention (the dreaded prescription). She thinks i may be able to get the numbers down a bit but that i am getting plenty of exercise and good diet so it may just be what it is. However, that being said, in her opinion no one should die of heart disease if caught early enough cardiac issues are substantially more preventable even given my tri-generation of cardiac related deaths on the maternal side. My numbers are so much higher than ever before it is concerning so we are doing some more testing and then going to review options after the carotid angiography and she pulled new blood for some additional labs. Concerning. And no, the small amount of cholesterol i do ingest has no bearing on these numbers including the heavy whipping cream (2T daily) and the couple of ounces of cheese a week i have on my egg white omelette so i can keep indulging that small love.

Hi Laurie i just read your bio. Was your surgery related to high cholesterol also? How is your health post surgery? You sound like a lovely person. Anyone who loves furry family is fantastic🥰

I would imagine it was, they never really came right out and said so.
My cholesterol is familial. Both parents and all three sisters yet I am the only one with a problem.
If I had to point at one single thing it would be all the years I smoked.
I am watchful but need to be more vigilant than I currently am.

It’s a start to know you need to be more vigilant though. Best of luck to both of us on the health trail.

YOH, I hope you get the answers you need. I think extra testing is wise but if you're genetically predisposed, what can you do? Glad you are cleared to have the small treats you enjoy.

I hear you load and clear. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women (it’s not men). I had open heart surgery this past June and I could have been a goner if it wasn’t discovered in time (ticking time bomb). Everyone should get tested, you’ll be surprised at the statistics. I have been given a second chance at life, so I repay by eating healthy and visiting my physician regularly. I exercise rigorously, losing 50 pounds and eating right. Please get yourselves checked out.

Simvastatin caused my small fiber neuropathy. Be careful. Statins are most overprescribed drugs in the world

I agree with sdfswsv. Statins are vastly over-prescribed and I'm a retired coronary care nurse. LOL. You can get muscle damage, kidney damage, liver damage, diabetes. Other countries, like the Britain heart association, have studied them and are more objective about them.

Lipid profile changes immensely post menopause
Statins do not work as well with females
Do not know your history but HRT can greatly reduce lipid profile numbers
I have elevated cholesterol as well as lipoprotein a and a positive calcium score at the age of 54
Went plant based plus some zetia and HRT
Cholesterol went from 311 to 194
With a 80 point drop before zetia or HRT so just with diet
Need to watch dietary saturated fats not cholesterol
Best wishes

I've stopped worrying so much about having food with cholesterol although I limit eggs to just 4 to 6 a week. I eat the yolks! That's where the flavor is. I try instead to focus on saturated fat. How long have your cholesterol numbers been so far from normal? I would probably take the medication since it appears losing weight or changing your diet isn't the issue.

Diana all i can do at this point is further testing to determine if medication is necessary. If no disease present i can make a more informed decision. We are going to pull new labs in 90 days and take another look. If it is continuing to climb then obviously i have no choice. I am not pro-medication unless all other avenues are exhausted so guess for now i continue to try and get it down by addition of more fiber via oatmeal and see where we go from there. So annoying. Stop working, get healthier but lets just give you this little monkey wrench so i have something to think about here and there…annoyance

Sdfswsv and Morticia-i am also not a fan of statins. I find them to be dangerous so it is actually a choice between am i getting coronary disease which will be fatal or do i try and protect heart from such. Right now we are still in the final testing to determine and probably a future of continued said testing. I am on HRT and have been for over a year so that is doing what it can for me. Thank you for the link Morticia.

Madamelaine-i am on HRT have been for a year. I am almost plant based with the addition of egg whites, small amounts of cheese, 2T heavy whipping cream once a day and the occasional chicken breast. Diet is not the issue for me it is genetics.

Fritzy-i watch both. My saturated fat intake is nearly nothing. My cholesterol numbers have been borderline high since i was a teenager or early 20’s. Cant remember. Just didnt know when i was so young what that meant. As i got older i forgot about it till someone would say your labs came back a little high. In my 50’s i was so ill and so overweight and so tired i just didnt care. I thought my lungs were going to do me in shortly so didnt think about it. Now im thinking about it😂. And yes, confirmed, weight and diet are not my issue. I wasn’t sure tho so medical confirmation that im eating appropriately and i could exercise more but would have no bearing on these numbers as i get plenty of experience just from the 4 miles a day i walk every morning. (Plus the 2x a week with trainer).

Here is a video about high cholesterol in folks who are genetically inclined to run high on LDL. I think you will find this important information for you. There's current research happening that may apply to you!

Really glad you’re taking care of yourself. It’s so easy to get side tracked on our clothing size that we can forget there’s a bigger picture. Wishing you all the best!
