I gained 100 pounds when I was pregnant the last time, and it took 7 years to take off 50. I maintained that weight, but also picked up a few friends along the way. You may know them, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

2 different diabetes meds multiple times daily, my A1C actually went up from 7 to 7.4. My doctor had no choice. She told me that I needed another diabetes medicine to help bring my numbers down. I was heading in the wrong direction, and for some reason my other meds weren't doing as good at their job. She wrote another prescription and I complained about medication again.

That was when she gave me the wake up call. She told me about a new way of eating. She told me about a lifestyle change. She mentioned Dr. Atkins and told me to buy the book. She told me that if I bought the book and lived the lifestyle I would be off the meds. I was angry. She wanted me to go on a diet. Heck, I was already on a diet with the diabetes. I didn't eat sweets, I didn't eat white bread, but I did eat pasta, lots of it. Home made sour dough bread, yeast rolls.

My doc wanted me to come back for a follow up a month later to let her know if I was going to make the change. "Make an appointment". I replied that I'd call if I decided, but probably would not. I was angry. She wanted me to go on a diet.

I was angry, so I took it out on my own body. That day I filled it with enough sugar to have not just 1 but 2 sugar spikes. I felt like crap. I dreamed of the doctor visit that night. I saw my doc sitting in a chair, pointing. She had told me so. I couldn't move.

The next morning, I bought the book. It took a couple of weeks to start doing it right, but I'm doing it. I've changed my lifestyle and have averaged a loss of 2 pounds a week. I went back to my doc a couple of weeks ago. It was a good visit. I thanked her and apologized for my anger. She read my food diary, my glucometer, and told me I had lost 7 pounds.

It is hard to hear the truth sometimes. Good for you for getting past the anger and making the change. I was told by my doctor if I didn't make the change I would end up with diabetes and possibly another stroke. After suffering a stroke I didn't want any more meds or medical complications, so I changed and feel so much better now. Good luck to you.

Thank you Dana. I'm glad that more doctors are going against the "low fat" standard. I wish you well with your journey also. We can do it :)
