Last time I took my bike out, I barely got a quarter of a mile and had to rest because I thought I was going to pass out. I got maybe a tenth of a mile further and had to stop again. Eventually I gave up and had to wheel my bike back home because I was so out of breath I couldn't peddle it. That was last month.

I just rode 2.3 miles.

I know that probably doesn't sound like a lot but it's huge. The last time I rode over two miles on a bike I was probably 15. I'm sweaty and out of breath and my lungs are burning a little but I did it.

I really didn't know if I'd be able to. Sure, I've been averaging 11+ miles a workout at the gym with no resistance but there's a huge difference between an exercise bike and actually riding. It takes a lot more energy to propel myself forward (especially considering the weight) and I didn't really know if I'd be able to.

I was surprised when I got to where I stopped last time and was able to keep going. I got past were I stopped AGAIN and kept going. I had to do a few quick pauses - mainly for traffic and a few times to breathe but that's a huge huge huge difference from last month.

I work about 3 miles from where I live and I'd like to be able to actually bike to work by the time the weather cools off in the fall. I'm actually thinking that it really really might be possible now which floors me.

Although, now that I know I can actually ride my bike, I need to get a few things for it - namely a water bottle holder and a somewhat comfortable seat. I have an el cheapo bike and the seat on it was designed for people who have no feeling in their ass. I put a gel pad over it but it's still not good. Anyone have good recommendations for a bike seat?

Great adventure!! Isn't it lovely going for a real bicycle ride? We have the American River Bike trail here near Sacramento and it is so nice as to get out and enjoy nature. My friend who has successfully lost over 60 pounds lives near the trail and rides religiously every day just about. She recently facebooked me a picture of her new friend, a little squirrel who hops like a bunny because he or she is missing a tail. Anyway, if it brings you joy and is fun. GO for it! TOWANDA!!!

I live in an area with a lot of great trails - even most of the roads where I live have bike lanes, plus there's a lot of other great areas (including a long awesome former canal that's been turned into a trail/state park) within driving distance. If I get really into biking I'm going to consider a nicer bike but for the time being I need to get a better bike seat tomorrow. It's weird, I guess I'm kinda outdoorsy but never really realized it before. I grew up in the woods of PA and used to mountain bike random trails as a kid/teen so I think that's why I've gotten so into this again (and hiking.)
