This is what I've learned over the past few weeks. I had decided to do a controlled increase of carbs to see how things went. I've lost more than half of what I wanted and thought I'd try going onto OWL. I had company for the last 10 days and an inflexible work schedule. All combined, I think the exercise provided valuable information.
1. I got hungry! Once I got hungry, I wanted anything I could get my hands on and it took extreme will power to find appropriate foods. Sometimes, I didn't! Ketosis gone.
2. A change in routine brought about a change in advance food preparation...made WOE more challenging.
3. I stopped exercising...missed it.
4. I'm not ready to move to OWL. Not sure if I'll ever be able to add more carbs if I want to get to my goal weight. Certainly not if I want to get there with the next 6 months! After I'm at my goal weight for a month or 2, maybe then I'll try again. All in all, a good exercise in understanding myself in relation to food and food choices!

When you do get ready to try again, keep in mind the routine changes, company visiting, and lack of exercise, and try to pick a time when the next 3-6 weeks looks calm around your house and schedule. I know exactly what you mean, by how that can throw off everything. You really need to be totally focused. Because you need to be watching exactly what you are adding...and determining how it is being received by your system...is it a keeper in the ongoing plan, or do you pull it back out, and try to re/introduce it again down the road...all of that over and over, takes time, and patience, and most of all a lot of focus each week so you know exactly what you are taking in. You know, all in all, what a great learning experience for you. Sorry about the 3.5 lb gain, or being thrown out of ketosis...but get yourself back on track and find a quiet time down the road to try again!

Thank you for sharing this. I tried to move onto OWL and found it harder than I'd expected. I'm now toying with going back to induction. At the moment, I'm in the starting phase of OWL. Even though it didn't work out for you this time, you are so right to think of it as an experiment in finding what works for you.

Thanks to you both for the kind words. Paula, you're right, doing it at a time that was crazy around the house wasn't the best decision! I'll know better next time. The other thing I realized is that out of routine=less water intake. This week I've concentrated on more water, back to 20g's!
