Another question for the public.
When you hear the term “meat free” for a dietary classification, would you expect that to exclude shellfish & fish?
Also, is “meat free” the right label for a diet that doesn’t include meat from cattle, sheep, pigs, goats etc?

if it has the term meat free I would assume that it would have no seafood also

Meat free to me would be no meat if any kind. Fish and seafood included. When I hear ‘meat free’ I think of veggie or soy burgers and tofu.

I wouldn't class fish or seafood as meat so no. I'm peseta run but I don't eat meat, just because I don't really like it and it disagrees with me, and we get such great fresh fish over here in the Canaries

"Meat free" suggests vegetarian, to me. I consider fish and shellfish still to be "meat" because it is still the flesh (meat) of an animal.

If you eat only fish and no other meat products, this is called "pescetarian"

I don't know, but I don't eat meat or seafood, because I don't like it, only chicken, I love dairy products and bacon grease though 😀

Vegan - no animal products.
Vegetarian - eggs and dairy included.
Pescatarian - eats fish in addition to dairy and eggs.
Carnivore - eats meat.
Omnivore - eats all food groups.

Thanks all for your input.
I ask because we’re looking at food classifications atm, and want to make sure we’re matching our thinking to customer expectations.
If there were a collection of diet classes ie: “meat free”, “fish”, “shellfish”, “red/white meats” would that change anyone’s answer?

@erquiaga those definitions align pretty closely to how I understood diets too

Cannboys, I am wondering if that would make it too complicated in focus or add too many groups. We have gluten free, keto, Atkins, Weight Watchers, T.O.P.S., and on and on. Everywhere you look, there is a new cure for our weight problems. My more recent concern are the number of underweight people who want to be even thinner who are using the app. Lots of anorexia, body dysmorphia, and depression.

Good point Chrisw77, everyone should be able to use the site. I just feel helpless when you read a post from someone who is really in trouble.

I am sure we can always email them privately and offer support.

I wasn't saying anything about specific WOE. Everyone is so different. I support anyone who is trying whether I agree with their plan or not. So, do you need the input on eating styles to streamline the journaling process?

It's hard I agree, I often start digging myself into a hole hahaha.
Fasting long term,no solid foods, keto, The list goes on and on of things that I wouldn't recommend. But if it works for others I have to accept it and hope the short term results have no long term I'll effects.

With those diet classes you mentioned I would still say ‘meat free’ means no animal meat of any kind (flesh). I would think tofu or all veggies. However I adapt easily to this sort of thing so if the definitions are easy to find in the app then I would catch on either way :).

The way forward I’m seeing, is to have a mix of broad & overlapping dietary mixes, but on the customer side we’ll ultimately ask people to get very granular about specific foods they do or don’t eat, then match them to potential diet plans that will suit them.

I have to agree with chrisw77 on this. I am an omnivore who rarely eats red meat but, on occasion, I may fancy a steak or something. We are pretty good at determining what foods we can or cannot eat but would prefer not to be lumped into a group.
