OH NO!!!! On the weekends we take our dogs to the elementary school with an enormous fully fenced playground and i go to one end and hubs with dogs to other (think the length of 2 football fields). I flag them. Hubs releases the big guy first and halfway thru field releases my little black guy (because he is a rocket and i dont want my big guy to always come in last place). I call it releasing the Kracken because hes a monster. His testosterone gets sky high on these runs. We do 3 of them. Well little dude has to be leashed up to go back up the field with hubs and hubs was running. He gets tripped in the leash and rolled over sideways twice (think car rolling over and over on its side). I saw that. Hubs stops and my little black dog has his dew claw nearly torn out. The leash got tangled just right. Bleeding. Limping. Holding paw up. Limping again today. Waiting on vet to get back to us. Apparently it can be fine but also can be dangerous as the dew claw connects to the bone and the danger of infection is real. I feel absolutely horrible. Hubs was beating himself up thinking it was his fault. It was just an accident. Wish i could take the pain away.

That swelling to me signals a deeper injury. I suggest bringing him in. He may have a fracture at worst, a connective tissue tear, or a simple sprain. The dew claw is obvious, the other possibilities can only be ruled out by a vet. Petey would never tolerate a bandage, so we kept her activity minimal simply to keep her from reinjuring the tear as it healed.

Lady, we have a mobile vet fortunately and have already texted her and sent pictures of the injury and swelling. He is weight bearing lightly on it but fortunately we are both home today and have been able to keep him next to us so he isn’t moving very much. He is a cuddle on his own terms kind of boy but tonight has been happy enough to cuddle with either of us when we pick him up and set him next to us or on our lap. Which is telling. Possibly a sprain tho. The swelling. They sell dog bandages that are stretchy and tho he has tried to gnaw on it because he is next to us we are stopping it. He’s very smart so he does seem to understand that is a no-no. Unfortunately i have a bone density scan tomorrow and Ryan will be at work so hopefully he is okay for a few hours at the house. The vet will call us tomorrow so will know more then. We are definitely better safe than sorry folks in re to our puppies. More so than with ourselves to be honest. Thank you for caring.

When first reading this, I thought Ryan had fallen. Glad it wasn't him, but so sorry for your little dog. Sounds very painful, I hope it heals soon. When our lab's leg was broken, the vet put him in a splint that let him walk without putting pressure on his foot.

Been there done that. It doesn't help it bleeds so much that it's terrifying to look at. Dogs are resilient creatures. They heal quickly, and 99% back to perfection. Biggest hugs to you and your hubby, and soft lil boops for the puppers. HUGS
